Thank You...Why couldn't I find this in my search of the Archives??? 
(rhetorical question - don't answer)

The remaining problem was that the ps2fax script refers to "$GSRIP" which 
is not
defined after the Ghostscript-6.50 install.  I just hacked ps2fax as follows

#PS=$GSRIP
PS=/usr/local/bin/gs

(I did say hack didn't I?)

Now things work with text files...
