Which binary? There have been a few. I would recommend reading:
http://www.hylafax.org/howto/install.php#ss2.3
and using the binary that is listed there.

Seems to be the notorious HylaFAX/libtiff incompatibility. The newer
binary that is quoted above in the HOWTO fixes this.
