Almost certainly not.  /dev/tty is the terminal you're on.  Usually,
on a Linux box it's either ttyS0 or ttyS1; on SCO, tty1a or tty2a
(lowercase because it's setting up for outbounds; you put the *getty*
on tty1A or 2A).

Yup; that's because it can't talk to the modem.
