It makes sense, but shouldn't matter as long as you are *CONSISTENT* about what you call the modem device. Most sites make /dev/modem a symbolic link to /dev/ttyS1 or /dev/ttyS0 under Linux, so software such as minicom automatically uses the correct device by default.
