More seriously, the HylaFAX mailing list is the wrong group for this
discussion. Try the Usenet newsgroup comp.dcom.modems. 

Also be aware that many Wintel boxes have weird rituals necessary to
convince themselves that the COM1 and COM2 should or shouldn't be
active, and that the modem can correctly use the IRQ's for one of
those ports. The Micron web site has good modem installation notes for
their machines which I've used to navigate these treacherous straits,
and I personally recommend external modems to avoid precisely these
problems.

Low end USR modems, such as the Sportsters, have had a long history of
serious problems as well. Beware of them...
