flexfax: PPP and HylaFAX

hello,
I am trying to get hylafax to accept incoming ppp connections.
I am using ver 4.0 on freebsd. I do not use hylfax for incoming faxes so

I have set AnswerRotary: "extern" so that the VGettyArgs should be
passed to whatever I have linked to egetty which is mgetty and start a
ppp connection.
so..
AnswerRotary: "extern"
egetty is linked to mgetty
VGettyArgs: "-r -s %s -"   and I tried "-r -s %s %l"   same effect.
the problem is, the modem answers but then just beeps about evey 5
seconds..
like it is waiting for something...

How do I tell what is going on with the spawing of the program with the
egetty hook?

I have looked though the archives and the faq .. there are some
references but none seem to deal with this situation.
