Strange error

Title: Strange error

I'm using hyla 4.1 beta2 on hpux 10.20, compiled with gcc 2.8.1. I've had a fax that sent 26 of 102 pages and then fail. Looking at the output of faxstat, the status for that job says:

Can not open document file

The last few lines of the session log say:
Dec 10 11:10:22.79: [21996]: SEND FAX (00000822): FROM regarza@kimball.com TO 9,1-717-986-3614 (page 26 of 102 sent in 2:27)

Dec 10 11:10:22.79: [21996]: SEND FAX (00000822): FROM regarza@kimball.com TO 9,1-717-986-3614 (docq/doc1811.ps;31 sent in 2:27)

Dec 10 11:10:22.80: [21996]: SEND file "docq/doc1812.ps;31"
Dec 10 11:10:22.80: [21996]: SEND: Can not open document file "docq/doc1812.ps;31", dirnum 0
Dec 10 11:10:22.80: [21996]: <-- [5:ATH0\r]
Dec 10 11:10:24.43: [21996]: --> [7:+FHNG:2]
Dec 10 11:10:24.43: [21996]: REMOTE HANGUP: Call aborted,  from +FK or <CAN> (code 2)
Dec 10 11:10:24.93: [21996]: --> [2:OK]
Dec 10 11:10:25.15: [21996]: SESSION END

The odd thing is that docq/doc1812.ps exists and seems to be valid postscript (ps2fax likes it ok). Likewise doc1813 thru doc1887 are there as well, and seem to be valid postscript. Now, near as I can figure, ps2fax failed to convert doc1813.ps into tif. The question is, how can I find out what happened? The session log doesn't tell, syslog doesn't tell, etc/xferfaxstats doesn't tell. What is "dirnum 0"? Is that related?

At first, I thought this was my old friend, the "mkstemp" "feature" (the c library function mkstemp on hpux fails after 26 calls), but now I don't think so - I have some faxes of over 26 pages that have went OK.
