unable to initialize modem

After successfully sending out a few faxes, the modem seemd to hang.
As I execute 'faxstat', I have the following message

HylaFAX scheduler on www.mycompany.com: Running
Modem cub0 (+1.999.999.9999): Waiting for modem to come ready

I then try to probe the modem by executing 'faxaddmodem'. It seems that the
modem is free but Hylafax cannot rehandle the modem.
