Is there another job, such as mgetty, already sitting on the modem
serial port? Or on the associated port previously used for UUCP
(/dev/ttyS0 and /dev/cua0 under older RedHat Linux)?

Hard to say: more details on the error messages would be
good. I don't know who else is runing Slackware....
