I've used them successfully.

It's not hard to split the service on another headless host:
*HOWEVER*, with the standard eeprom settings and Solaris equivalent of
ttytab, when you boot the machine headlessly, it will assume that
there is a terminal on /dev/ttya/a and try to communicate with it at
boot time. I went several rounds with a SunOS system before figuring
this one out....
