flexfax: Starting faxgetty

I've installed hylafax, installed the modem with faxsetup and
faxaddmodem, and got faxgetty running (sent a test fax to it
successfully)  Now, the machine was reboot
and I have not yet placed faxgetty in /etc/inittab.  I ran faxgetty
/dev/ttyS0 and it shows up in the process list, but when I phone the
machine, it does not answer!  What is needed to manually (and later
automatically) start the inbound fax service?
