I recommend Darren's RPM at ftp://ftp.tpc.int/pub/hylafax. I don't know why it is not locking. Are you using /dev/modem, correctly linked to /dev/cua0 or /dev/cua1 or something like that on /dev/ttyS0 or /dev/ttyS1?
