The problem with TIFF is that people think it is a graphics format, when it is really a format for describing graphics format. TIFF viewers may only understand a limited number of the possible formats. The T stands for tag; the tags label parameters about the image, including which basic format it is. Like Postscript Level 2, TIFF can contain data in essentially GIF and JPEG formats, as well as raw bit maps and fax encodings. Incidentally the Wang Imaging Tool, bundled with NT 4, can view Hylafax generated TIFF(G3) documents.
