Wait: are you talking about viewing the *OUTGOING* faxes, or the incoming?

In any case, the fax documents are transformed into tiffg3 or tiffg4,
depending on your settings. Yes, this is TIFF. No, many graphic
viewers cannot handle it properly, being written for more commonly
used *versions* of TIFF.

Sam Leffler of SGI apparently wrote TIFF, and he wrote the original
flexfax and HylaFAX, so I assume it is in fact completely up to the
TIFF standards. But what other people do with it to make it usable
for them is an adventure in standards....
