OK. I strongly suspect that the 2.0 is the problem. We've seen a lot
of reports on this group os people using modems that *claimed* to be
2.0, especially on the box, but when run only worked in Class 1 mode.
This seems especially true of the 33.6 modems, which I tried with a
USR Sportster 33.6 and a PPI 33.6 (I never did get the PPI
straightened out and had to give it back to its owner). It may
also be true of the 56k modems.

Completely reasonable approach. One note: is there any reason not to
upgrade your Linux to a more recent, 2.0.30 kernel? There are a *lot*
of patches, drivers, and security fixes in the more recent kernels
that aren't available in the older ones.
