Solaris 2.5 Modem Replacement for USR

We are running Hylafax 4.0 PL 1.0 under Solaris 2.5. We have
experienced the USR Sportster Class 2 Transmit Phase B error, and are
currently running with an old USR Sportster 14,400 in Class 1 mode
with 50-60% success (failure to retrain after the cover page causes
3-4 blank pages to spew out at the destination before the rest of the
fax oes through). A SUPRA FAX V.32 bis modem did not recover from
that retrain after the first page. We have experimented with flow
control to no avail.

We could hobble along with the USR 14,400, putting up with the extra
pages during retrain, for a while. Do any of you have a modem
recommendation for this configuration? Or conversely, a
modem-not-to-use? I notice that the pages with happy-face modem
recommendations are somewhat out-of-date.
