Hylafax and PPP?

Hi! I would like to use a single modem to recieve faxes and to let people log in (using PPP). I can recieve faxes now - but when someone tries to dial for an PPP-Connection the modems do not connect. What's wrong? Should I send a special INIT-String? The Hylafax-modem is a USR Sportster 28.8 - the client side is a generic 14k modem.
