[hylafax-devel] Re: config/usr-xon & usr-rts

Hi,

I object to the ModemSetupAACmd being commented out because....

You have to remember that HylaFAX replaces the normal system getty, and
people should be able to dial in to their system with a data modem and get a
"login: " prompt WITHOUT having to read manuals and try to understand how to
configure their modem for adaptive answer.

Many installations are not just for fax use, many are used for data as well.

I feel that Adaptive Answer SHOULD be enabled in all config files.

It doesn't break the fax operation at all, so it is just increased
functionality of the software.

I know for sure the MultiTech ZDX 56K modems with the Rockwell chipset
need to be "idling in class 0" to do adaptive answer.

>From the config file:
ModemSetupAACmd: AT+FCLASS=0;+FAA=1 # enable in class 0

If I don't have the +FCLASS=0 in there, the modem answers in fax mode
all the time.

As for the USR Sportster modems being crap.... I was a volunteer with
a Unix Users group here in Calgary. We purchased 120 Sportsters, and
regretted it within 1 week when they started to randomly lock up, not
answer... ever tried to find a modem in a rotary dial pool of 50 modems?
it REALLY sucks...

Remember the "USR Sportster death spiral??", where they would retrain
themselves down and down and down until the modem was unusable?? I DO!!

We ended up replacing them with USR Courier modems and never looked back.

The fact that a modem works does NOT mean that it a good modem...just that
it works...

> But it has nothing to do with the discussed case. After
>
> ModemSetupAACmd: AT+FCLASS=0 # leave modem idling in class 0
> ModemAnswerCmd: AT+FCLASS=1A # answer in Class 1

OK, so I didn't read the complete email...sorry about that...

and your are 100 % correct that ModemAnswerCMD being what it is above is
really #$%^&*(!!!!.

I seem to recall that it was the only way to get the Sportster working in
Adaptive Answer mode. It works in fax only mode, or data only mode acceptable,
but to try to get adaptive answer working on the Sportster is pure hell!!

( from being on the mailing lists for 6 years or so now )....
