    I'm trying to get 4.0beta18 to work on my FreeBSD 2.1.5 host.
    I have a USRobotics Courier modem (class 2.0) connected.
    The modem works, I'm using it for PPP normally.

Actually you mean "the modem works for data".
    
    But I get 'DCS sent 3 times without response' when I try to send a fax.
    (code 25)
    
    Can anyone explain why and maybe how to fix it?
    
USR's Class 2.0 fax firmware is notoriously substandard.  If you intend
to depend on a modem for facsimile communication you should look at the
documentation for recommendations on modems that are thought to be good.
