Read (again) the README file and the HTML-based documentation included in the HylaFAX distribution (this information is provided online through the HylaFAX Home Page.) In particular, read the Troubleshooting section in the documentation.

Check this FAQ.

See if a similar problem is listed in the HylaFAX mailing list archives. Summary lists of articles sent to the mailing list are posted periodically and there is an on-line interface to the mailing list archives that supports searching.

As a last resort: submit your problems to other users:

To the HylaFAX mailing list; see here for information on submitting bug reports.
To the USENET newsgroup comp.dcom.modems or comp.dcom.fax, but only if it a problem with the modem or a fax machine.
