I had a lot of problems using serial modem on (many) proliant machines.
I investigate with hp support and their latest answer was that the
serial port on their server only support console connection :-(

Please note that when the modem went wedget, the serial line was
completely unusable. The only solution was to power off the machine and
disconnect power cable.

Buying an USB-to-Serial converter fixed all problems.
