[hylafax-users] FIFO.ttyS0: open: No such device or address

Hi,

I have a hylafax installation that I've messed up somehow after I changed a modem -- so ripped everything out and started over. Initially I had problems with faxstat -s prompting for a password, despite apparently correct hosts.hfaxd -- consistently failed with HylaFAX 4.3.0, but (hurrah!) problem is resolved by installing 4.3.1.

However, now I can't set up my modem :-( It's an external one, on ttyS0, and probemodem detects it ok. I've tried:

rm /var/spool/fax/FIFO*
reboot
faxsetup
faxaddmodem
faxmodem ttyS0
... and I still get
# faxstate ttyS0
FIFO.ttyS0: open: No such device or address#

# ls -l /var/spool/fax

The closest thing I can find in the archives is this: http://www.hylafax.org/archive/2000-01/msg00415.php
... but the faxq and hfaxd rocesses seem to be running fine:

# ps -ef | grep fax
uucp 4623 1 0 May05 ? 00:00:00 /usr/sbin/faxq
uucp 4625 1 0 May05 ? 00:00:00 /usr/sbin/hfaxd -i hylafax

This is a send-only install, so I'm using faxmodem instead of faxgetty. I

Any suggestions how I could debug this?

Great software, many thanks to all who've worked on it.

OS: Gentoo Linux
HylaFAX: 4.3.1

Now whenever I `faxstat -s` I get prompted for a password -- for any user, including root, whether or not they belong to the 'uucp' or 'fax' groups. Permissions on hosts.hfaxd are 0600, owned by fax:fax.

# ls -la /var/spool/fax/etc
...
-rw------- 1 fax fax 13 May 5 21:18 hosts.hfaxd
...
# cat /var/spool/fax/etc/hosts.hfaxd
127\.0\.0\.1

I don't have a /etc/hylafax dir, as suggested by some googling I've tried
# ln -s /var/spool/fax/etc/ /etc/hylafax
without effect.
[Google keywords: "faxstat -s prompts for password", "requires password", "always asks for password"].
