The difference between Class 1 and Class 1.0 in the case of the MT5634ZPX is V.34-Fax support. When using V.34-Fax the initial handshaking is done differently. In V.34 it is done with V.8 and with non-V.34 it is done with V.21 signaling.

It is entirely possible that when attempting V.8 handshaking something went wrong (probably on the part of the ZPX modem) or happened unexpectedly and thus throws up the "NO CARRIER" result.

I'd suggest making sure that your 5634ZPX has the latest firmware. If the problem exists with the latest firmware then I'd suggest contacting Multitech about it. As Agere (now LSI) has discontinued the Venus chipset (which is on the 5634ZPX) I'm not sure how likely a solution would be forthcoming. Realize that the Venus was the first popular fax modem chipset to support V.34-Fax. LSI has succeeded the Venus with the CFAX34 chipset which you can find on the Mainpine IQ Express cards, and its quite possible that the problem does not exist with those... and if it does, then Mainpine and LSI are likely able to resolve it.

In these cases, as a workaround, you could use JobControl to enable Class 1 when faxing to the troublesome destinations.

Thanks,

Lee.
