Well, you need to run faxgetty.  See HOWTO item 2.2.5:

And if you don't think that you need to run faxgetty then see:

http://hylafax.sourceforge.net/howto/tweaking.php#ss6.6

And since you're epecting to see modem status it means that you should 
run faxgetty.

But I did ask for 'faxstat' output, too.
