We've found the asterisk/iaxmodem/hylafax solution to be -EXTREMELY- robust. For Zaptel interface cards(faxing), we've been standardizing on Openvox as they are 100% Digium hardware compatible and offer a lower price point. We do many phone systems as well and for voice applications, the extra money spent on Sangoma is well worth it. Their motto "Because it must work" is no joke. Sangoma's hardware, software, and support have been second to none for us.

I've had much better results using Sangoma's hardware as opposed to
Digium cards. Even if there /is/ merit to the claim, that's not to say
that asterisk+iaxmodem+hylafax isn't a solid combination.
