On most Multitech 5634 modems you should have this in your modem config 
file:

Class1HasRHConnectBug: yes

Do you have it?  If not, put it there and see if you get any improvement 
in the recovery to this condition you see above.  The condition will 
still occur, but it should be handled afterwards in a way that should 
often recover the session... rather than session failure.
