[hylafax-users] Newbie setup help: Debian/Ubuntu

Greetings all.

I apologize up front for being a newbie. But I'm missing some steps somewhere and as much as I've search the documentation, I can't figure this out. I think my real question is ** How do I setup the machine to run the faxgetty program? **

Here's what I've done so far:

I started a few different times now to try and get this up and running. First I downloaded an ubunutu/debian linux install from the VMWare appliance site. It has a valid install, and I was able to get the modem configured so that when I sent a fax to it, it did dump the TIFF image into the proper folder. However, I had to manually start the faxgetty program and as soon as the document came in, it stopped.

Because of this, I cannot tell if that was the reason that the sending fax machine said the fax failed.

Do I have something miss-configured so that hfaxd does not handle the faxgetty itself?

In addition to the pre-built VMware appliance, I've also setup an ubuntu install and tried the ubuntu hylafax package and another one where I installed hylafax directly from source. None of them show faxgetty in the process list unless I run it manually. My next step is to try and install the source forge package onto a true debian installation (still working on getting it installed.)

In case it isn't painfully obvious, I have much experience with unix-like systems, but only as a user and not as an administrator. So I'm really sorry for asking for the hand holding .

My purpose is to setup a (virtual) machine where I'll be able to just receive faxes, and FTP them out to get further processed. This box will be pretty well segregated so I'm not overly concerned with my limited security knowledge. The only in bound service will be the fax modem (and possibly SSH for configuration) and some outbound services for getting the faxes out of the server.

Thanks in advance!

Sincerely,
Ben
