[hylafax-users] general IAXmodem concepts

Hi folks,

I'm wondering if someone can clarify if I'm understanding this correctly...

I've done about as much googling and reading as I can absorb but I'm hitting the problem that all the jargon is defined in terms of other jargon. I've had HylaFAX going on 3 analog lines for a couple of years now so my understanding is okay in that department.

I guess my main question is, can I run just IAXmodem (without Asterisk) and let it be the client to my VOIP provider's IAX compatible server?

Then I'll understand which of these scenarios are possible or impossible:

1. My HylaFAX server runs IAXmodem, IAXmodem talks to VOIP provider's IAX compatible server to place fax calls to PSTN

2. My HylaFAX server talks to IAXmodem, which is running in my Asterisk server (possibly on same box), Asterisk server talks to VOIP provider's IAX compatible server to place fax calls to PSTN

3. My HylaFAX server talks to IAXmodem, which is running in my Asterisk server (possible on same box), Asterisk server uses one of its FXOs connected to one of my analog lines to place fax calls to PSTN

4. None of the above, or, uhh.... something completely different, or ... ???

I understand the caveats about faxing over VOIP (at least in as much as one can understand the caveats without understanding the above! ).

So I'm looking for more understanding.

Thanks.

Martin
