Re: [hylafax-users] Using a serial modem through a converter from ethernet to serial

Hi all!

One of our customer is trying to setup a linux server virtualized on VMWARE to send faxes.

The main problem is VMWARE ESX limit the support to only serial ports and that he has only 1 physical serial port on the physical machine.

To solve the issue and have more than 1 fax connected to the virtual server he has ordered a ethernet to serial converter:

ET-BOX-232

http://www.qfp.it/et-box.php

After the installation of the kernel module and the configuration of the virtual layer to see the virtual serial device, I was able to launch faxsetup on the virtual device and it has correctly recognized the USB Robotics modem that was connected the the converter.

But the story is not a success... we are unable to send faxes, the device seems to hang.

We have used a stallion port server to map modems connected remotely to our linux server.
There is a small app that comes with the easyserver called svr_tty that mpas from ip:port to tty devices.
I cant see why it wouldn't work on a virtual machine... but never tried.

I've asked for support to qfp and they are willing to help me, but they asked me something that I really don't know on hylafax use of the serial port:

ITALIAN LANGUAGE:

ENGLISH TRANSLATION:
you have to know that the kernel module handle tx, rx, rts and cts signals, but it does not handle other control signals, i.e. CD, RI.
As far as you know, the application does need those signals?

So, the question is, does hylafax need CD, RI or other serial control signals to properly function?

Thanks in advance
