Re: [hylafax-users] Current release
Darren Nickerson wrote:
If you see anything with 5.x in it, it's not HylaFAX, but HylaFAX+.
HylaFAX+ is a separate software product, developed independently from
HylaFAX, and the two software products are not compatible with one
another. ie: you can't just change back and forth between them and
expect features and/or behaviour to be the same.
This is a very monochromatic way of putting things.
Virtually all users of HylaFAX 4.3.0 and earlier will be able to upgrade
to HylaFAX+ 5.0.x without any incompatibility issues to worry about.
Likewise, users of 4.3.1 will also be able to smoothly transition to
5.0.x without any compatibility concerns provided that they haven't
customized the notification mail templates. (And even then, customizing
the mailing scripts isn't difficult at all.)
HylaFAX+ releases are, indeed, entirely independent from the releases
occuring at hylafax.org. However, to say that the two software
developments are entirely independent is not accurate, in my view of
things. Although I no longer make commits to the hylafax.org repository
I do continue to participate in HylaFAX development generally, and some
work that I do on HylaFAX+ does eventually get incorporated into or
otherwise inspire or prompt development in the hylafax.org repository.
Similarly, work that gets done directly in the hylafax.org repository
does usually get ported into HylaFAX+ (the exception being when it deals
with divergent features - like the mail templating). I don't see that
as a completely independent relationship.
Lastly, I don't think that it's quite accurate to say that HylaFAX+ is
not HylaFAX. I think that many of its users would maintain that,
indeed, it is.
Thanks,
Lee.
