You're not alone in that Joe, that postscript coverpage is definitely a sore spot among developers and users alike. The current approach uses some of the features of the postscript language itself to do the merge/overlay of the job-specific information. It can be argued that it's effective, efficient and in some ways even elegant, but it's mostly just seen as arcane, counter-intuitive and nasty. As a community we've looked at things like PDF forms (using Adobe's FDF toolkit) and various other things in the past, but I don't think anything better has ever been discovered/suggested to date - at least nothing for which there's source code available. Adobe's forms aren't useful unless you use their rendering engine (Acrobat reader, for instance).


This would be a great project for someone looking to make a significant contribution to HylaFAX!
