It is certainly possible to have a LAN where there will be no problem with jitter. However, not all private LANs will be so lucky. So it's important to point out that just because passing fax audio over a LAN VoIP connection works okay for one person it may not necessarily work for another.

For an example, I've ran a few iaxmodems over a LAN connection before, and as I started adding additional iaxmodems I noticed a corresponding increase in network jitter. These iaxmodems are constantly busy, and so network traffic by them is guaranteed. And it appeared fairly clear that as I was adding iaxmodems I was also increasing network traffic and thus the likelihood that some collission would occur on the switch/hub and cause jitter. So while one or two iaxmodems in that scenario seemed to work very well with very, very little noticeable jitter... as I increased the iaxmodems to, say, five ... that's when I started noticing more problems (not constant problems, but more noticeable than before).

Thanks,

Lee.
