Why would this hose your customizations?  I don't know how the 
particular RPM that you install with Yum does things, but it shouldn't 
be overwriting properly-done customizations.

You shouldn't edit or otherwise customize the faxrcvd file directly.  If 
you need a custom faxrcvd then copy it to, say, "etc/faxrcvd.custom" 
edit that file instead, and then set FaxRcvdCmd to point to it in your 
modem config files.  FaxDispatch shouldn't get overwritten, and neither 
should the config.tty files.
