It's been too long for me to remember the details, but I dimly remember
that the Debian version worked.

No.  SMMSP works fine.  (Presumably for outbound notification.  You'll
have to get more fancy if you want to set up an email->fax gateway.)

I have no idea where this comes from, but it's not true.
