Well, I have gone through everyone's suggestions, but I am still  
getting the same results.

Mark's suggestion is interesting but every way I've edited  
hosts.hfaxd has not changed anything.

Here are the changes I have done to hosts.hfaxd:

1. Original config:
localhost:21::
10\.0\.1\.:::

2. Next
localhost:21::
10.0.1.:::

3. Next
localhost:21::
^curtis@xxxxxxx:::

4. Next
localhost:21::
^curtis@
10.0.1.:::

Each time, the same error.

BTW, I have chmod on printfax.log, but no difference.
