Also, with a USR modem I would recommend always upgrade to latest firmware. In my own case (5688B in Class 1), this was essential for reliable receiving from some machines. As far as single-port analog modems go I usually recommend the MultiTech MT5634 series. If you don't care about V.34-Fax (SuperG3) then almost any Rockwell/Conexant or Lucent/Agere chipsetted modem *should* work quite well if Class 1 is supported. USR modems usually were using TI chipsets in the old days. These days they're using 3Com chipsets which appear to me to function quite similarly to those TIs.
