Thanks alot for very good tips. I'm stuck again tho. :) Starting off as easy as possible with:

strace -s 512 -o debug cat pdfmail | faxmail > mail.ps

shows that it parses the mail headers, then starts to read what I presume is the pdf itself. Then after a few read and writes (8KB it seems)it ends like this:
