The newer version(s) of Winprint Hylafax do fix up some bugs that creep up in XP so using the absolute latest version as you have is a good idea.

IIRC the software does open a connection to the server before displaying the number dialog. Checking your firewall settings (outgoing connections to port 4559) as suggested earlier.

As suggest. It definitely should work with XP. I've installed it on at least five machines with no problems.

Try version 1.1.8 ?... Its working for me on WinXP Version 2002 service 
pack 1 with Hylafax 4.2.1 on freebsd 5.4

Strange.  Im not an expert with Hylafax or Windows but what about 
checking the firewall settings for the NIC connecting to the Hylafax 
Server ?

  

With Windows 2000 everything works fine.

I also tried WHFC but setup does not start (no error message). 

Does anybody has an idea?
