Well, the reason why 1-D is being used is because faxq is preparing all 
faxes for this modem with 1-D encoding.  As you're using an older version 
of HylaFAX it's possible that this is a bug that has been fixed.  You may 
want to upgrade to 4.2.1.  At the very least, upgraging will get you 
ModemSoftRTFCC which will allow faxsend to convert from 1-D to 2-D 
on-the-fly.
