Finally got it.

It had been nagging at me for a while, in the back of my head, that I'd seen
this before, but I could never find anything by searching the mail archives,
in spite of trying repeatedly.  Finally, I just started combing through them
by hand and found this thread:

I switched to using /usr/bin/gawk instead of /usr/bin/mawk, and now
transmission reports work.

BTW, for some reason, no matter what I search on in the mailing list
archives page, I never get any results newer than 2003.

Sorry to drag this thread out so long when I could have solved it just by
digging through the archives.  It's kind of embarassing.
