Thx for this hint. I changed the setting and tried again, but everything
went fine.
Change towards yesterday was that I did not read saved faxes out of the
modem beforehand. So, it might be that after the program, that reads stored
faxes out of the modem (kmessagemodem) was finished, hylafax did not connect
properly again.

can that be?

I'll try to follow up on that.
