First find out how you can send mail on Solaris using the sendmail binary
(without using HylaFAX) and then we'll see what HylaFAX can do.
Giulio,

If I set...
drwxrwx--- 2 smmsp smmsp 512 Apr 22 07:44 clientmqueue
...then I can send mail via mutt or mailx, but none of the HylaFAX email
functions work.

If I set...
drwxrwx--- 2 smmsp root 512 Apr 22 07:44 clientmqueue
...then I can send mail via mutt or mailx and HylaFAX will email when a
fax is completed or removed from the queue, but it does not notify when
there is a received fax or if a sendfax attempt fails.

What I'm saying is that you should ignore HylaFAX for a moment and find a
way to send email using

echo test | sendmail -oi user.

I think this is a Solaris problem not an HylaFAX one.

The same scripts send email succesfully on other systems, so maybe Solaris
has some specific/different requirements.

The program that is giving the error is sendmail.

In order to send mail as a different user, you have to be listed as being a "trusted user" in sendmail.cf.

Look for a block looking something like this in sendmail.cf:

#####################
# Trusted users #
#####################

# this is equivalent to setting class "t"
Ft/etc/mail/trusted-users
Troot
Tdaemon
Tuucp
