Strangly, I'm in a somewhat similar scenario. I have just recently setup
a new fax server with 3 HCF Conexant modems using drivers from
linuxant.com. On one modem, the only one currently being used, I've
gotten a "wedged modem" status during the night the past 2 days. I'm not
sure if it's cheap hardware or the driver. I havn't noticed any
transmission quality error.  What kind of bad quality are you having? Is
it visable in the tif file?

I've just installed my hylafax server with my Olitec PCI V92 Ready card
(this an HSF Connexant chipset) so I've bougth the specific driver to
linuxant.com

All seems to work properly except in receiving mode. It's seems to be a
transmission quality error or something like this. Does anyone have got
an Ideao to solve this probleme or a correct Hylafax config file for
this kind of modem ?
