You do realise that despite the slightly misleading terminologies used by
the FreeBSD team, the 5.x are not release-grade kernels, right? 5.1 is
probably even more bleeding (broken)-edged than usual.

Try a release kernel, 4.8.x. Seriously. A kernel that locks up when a
userland process opens a serial port is seriously broken and brain-damaged.
There is nothing within HylaFAX or that modem [which I used on Linux] to
cause this. Your question is better directed to the FBSD developers,
particularly, the serial port driver maintainer(s).
Really, I'm not busting your balls, and I use FBSD on a Snort box myself.
But the 5.x code quality/stability is highly variable and I wouldn't touch
it in production use. Caveat Emptor.
