Thanks for quick response :)
If I'm buying a new fax modem for a freebsd machine, which one should I get?
Well, for the most-part, any Class 1 modem will be nearly fine - especially if you can put together the config file yourself. Class 2 is another story altogether. The exception to this rule are USR modems in Class 1 (occasional firmware freezes with new models) or Class 2 (flawed protocol) and Digi modems in Class 1 (flawed protocol, their Class 2/2.0 seems fine).
However, if you do run into a firmware problem, it pays to have a manufacturer who supports their hardware. And, the only single-line analog modem manufacturer that I know of that does... is MultiTech... plus MultiTech's Class 2/2.0/2.1 feature-set (MMR, RTFCC, and V.34) is nice to have.
