Only to commiserate: I am in exactly the same situation.  I am very sure there 
is a solution to this, but I have the same issues.  The only other thing I 
can suggest is to make sure you try both options for the +VDR second 
parameter.  That is supposed to determine whether or not it reports the RING 
(and other messages) as well as the DRON/DROFF or not.  

I am working on this issue, and will let you know if I find a solution.  I'd 
appreciate it if you'd do the same.
