Some update: I also tried disabling adaptive answer, no change. And checking with several friend with different fax machine types and located in different cities turns out an 80% failure ratio, always with the "Ring detected without successful handshake" message. Not a very good percentage, is it? ;) I can SEND to them all, though, and receive from them all if I plug in a regular fax machine.
