use this instead:
ps -ax | grep fax

Also, you must tell it to start the service on bootup.
To start the service manually in SuSE 8.1:
/etc/init.d/hylafax start

Do this, then check with ps -ax |grep fax  , then try to connect.
If this works, make sure to enable hylafax on bootup.
