Sorry if I was a little too vague earlier. I can get everything to work in terms of job creation and submission. What escapes me is how to get ftp to upload the file and correctly access docq/seqf. I can fool it by using STOT and getting a failure and then overwriting the zero length file that is created in /tmp which will then work when submitted as a job, but there must be a proper "quote" command sequence to upload a file that causes hfaxd to correctly increment docq/seqf and place the file named correctly in /tmp (/tmp being relative to /var/spool/hylafax of course) in the local tree the ftp understands. The mail list archives are bare on this and I have tried to read the source for sendfax to get an idea but that program establishes its own socket through the hfax system. Running sendfax -vv shows its mechanism but there is no duplicate command that seems to work in ftp "quote" section and I wouldn't know what port numbers to choose for a parallel pipe anyway. I've not yet gotten tcpdump to work on only 4559 packets to a particular host so I'm still researching there. Again any help appreciated in particular a simple command sequence example.
