This smells of a flow control problem, but I'm not familiar with the
RocketmodemII.  Does this 6 port modem sit on the PCI bus?

Usually when I have a problem like this I'll switch the flow control scheme
to use the other one, viz., XONXOFF if CRTSCTS was specified, and vice versa.
